Troubleshooting

Fix Minecraft “FAILED TO BIND TO PORT!”

The server cannot claim its listening address and port. Read the exception below the warning: “Address already in use” points to a competing listener; “Cannot assign requested address” points to the bind IP.

Updated 2 November 2026

Wispdock’s control panel isn’t built yet. Where a step says “in your control panel”, use whatever your host gives you for files, the console and start/stop. The Minecraft side works the same everywhere.

Read the exception before changing ports

**** FAILED TO BIND TO PORT!
The exception was: java.net.BindException: Address already in use
Perhaps a server is already running on that port?

This representative error sequence means the address and port are occupied. It is not a router port-forwarding error. Read the first startup failure with the server logs guide; a firewall does not normally prevent a local process from binding.

Find the process using the port

Stop the server normally through its console or panel first. A second startup script, service restart or leftover Java process may still be running. On Linux, inspect TCP and UDP listeners:

ss -tulpn | grep 25565
lsof -i :25565

Process details may require administrator privileges. In Windows Command Prompt:

netstat -ano | findstr :25565

Confirm the exact local port, protocol and PID; this text filter can also match a remote port. Check the PID in Task Manager or use ps -p 1234 -f on Linux. Do not stop an unrelated Java application.

For your identified server, send stop to its console and wait for the world to save. If it is stuck, kill 1234 sends a termination request on Linux. On Windows, a last resort is:

taskkill /PID <pid> /F

Replace <pid> with the actual numeric PID, without angle brackets. Forced termination may lose unsaved world changes. Do not kill every Java process. If a service immediately restarts the process, stop that service or its panel restart loop before trying again.

Leave server-ip blank for a normal setup

Cannot assign requested address means the configured IP is not assigned to an interface in the server’s network environment. A home router’s public IP is usually not an address on your PC. In server.properties, a normal setup uses:

server-ip=
server-port=25565

Do not put a domain or a remote public IP in server-ip. An intentional multi-interface or container setup must use an address available inside that environment. See server.properties settings before changing other fields. A “Permission denied” bind failure on ports below 1024 can be a privilege restriction; choose an allowed higher port instead of running Minecraft as root.

Check Bedrock, Geyser, query and RCON separately

Java normally uses 25565/TCP. Bedrock normally uses 19132/UDP; inspect that listener with ss -ulpn | grep 19132. Geyser also needs its configured Bedrock listener, commonly 19132/UDP. Two UDP services on the same bind address and port can conflict.

Query uses UDP; RCON uses TCP. A Java TCP listener and a Query UDP listener may share the same number because the protocols differ. RCON cannot take the main Java TCP port on the same address, and Query can collide with Geyser if both take the same UDP socket. Check each enabled service’s configuration rather than assigning every service one port.

Geyser transports can have additional requirements; follow the official Geyser setup instructions for your build.

Use the port allocated by your host

On managed hosting, use the assigned address and port, even if it is not 25565. Containers may not be allowed to bind arbitrary ports. Ask the host for a separate allocation if Geyser, Query or RCON needs one; do not guess a free number from your own computer.

When discussing Minecraft Java hosting, include the allocation and the full bind exception. Check the server software guide if you are mixing a Java server with a Bedrock bridge.

Confirm a single listener and join

Start only one server instance. Confirm the bind error is gone, the log reaches Done, and the expected process owns the correct socket. Then connect using the assigned port. If startup succeeds but joining fails, continue with the connection troubleshooting guide. Router and firewall checks belong at that stage.

Frequently asked questions

Should I change 25565 to another port?

Only if you control the allocation and deliberately need another port. First stop the duplicate listener; on managed hosting use the assigned port.

What should server-ip contain?

For a normal setup, leave it blank. A specific bind IP must belong to an interface available to the server process.

Can Java and Bedrock use the same port number?

TCP and UDP are separate. The same number can work across protocols, but two listeners competing for the same address, port and protocol can conflict.
