Troubleshooting

Fix Minecraft “Unable to access jarfile server.jar”

Java cannot open the file named after -jar. Check the exact filename and the folder the command runs from before reinstalling Java or changing memory settings.

Updated 2 November 2026

Wispdock’s control panel isn’t built yet. Where a step says “in your control panel”, use whatever your host gives you for files, the console and start/stop. The Minecraft side works the same everywhere.

Check the real filename

Error: Unable to access jarfile server.jar

This happens before Minecraft starts, so there may be no new latest.log. Stop any automatic restart loop and list the server folder. On Linux or macOS:

ls -la

In Windows Command Prompt:

dir

If the download is named paper-1.21.1-xxx.jar, a command pointing at server.jar cannot find it. Use the actual name in the startup command or rename the downloaded jar to server.jar. Here, xxx stands for the real build number; do not type it literally. Linux filenames are case-sensitive.

In Windows File Explorer, enable View → Show → File name extensions. A file displayed as server.jar may really be server.jar.txt. Remove the extra extension only if it is a genuine jar, not a text file containing a download link.

Run from the server directory

A relative filename is resolved from the working directory, which may differ from the script location. Change to the folder containing the jar first:

cd /srv/minecraft
ls -la
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui

On Windows, cd /d also changes the drive:

cd /d "C:\Minecraft Server"
dir
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui

Quote paths containing spaces. An absolute jar path also works:

java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar "/srv/Minecraft Server/server.jar" nogui

Still set the working directory to the server folder: Minecraft writes worlds and configuration relative to it. The 4G values are an example; use memory that fits your machine and leave room for the operating system.

Check the download and permissions

Compare the file size with the download source. A zero-byte file, tiny HTML error page or interrupted download is not a usable server jar. A corrupt archive may instead produce “Invalid or corrupt jarfile”. Download again from the server project’s official site. If unzip is installed, test the archive:

unzip -t server.jar
ls -l server.jar

The account running Java needs read permission on the jar and search permission on its parent directories. As the file owner, chmod u+r server.jar restores your read permission. If a service or container runs under another account, check ownership and that account’s access instead. Do not apply recursive 777 permissions. A jar launched with java -jar does not need an executable bit.

Match the panel startup variable

In a hosting panel, compare the uploaded filename with the startup variable, often called SERVER_JARFILE. If the command uses -jar {{SERVER_JARFILE}}, set the variable to the exact uploaded jar name. The panel may lock this field; ask the host to correct it rather than putting a second jar in a random folder.

For Minecraft Java hosting, share the startup command and the file listing when asking for help. Wispdock is preparing its service; these panel labels are examples, not a claim about a live Wispdock panel.

Forge and NeoForge releases may use generated scripts and library arguments instead of one server jar. Follow the distribution’s launch instructions; the server software guide explains the differences.

Start once and check the next message

Start the server once. If it reaches the EULA prompt or begins loading Minecraft, Java has opened the jar. A successful startup ends with Done. A different error is a separate branch: use the logs guide to find it. If you reach Done but cannot join, check server.properties and the connection guide.

Reference: Paper’s startup troubleshooting also checks the jar filename against the startup script.

Frequently asked questions

Does this error mean I need more RAM?

No. Java cannot open the named file. Check its path, filename and read permission first.

Should I rename the jar to server.jar?

Either rename the genuine server jar or change the startup command to its actual name. The command and file must match.

Why does the jar work in a terminal but fail in a panel?

The panel may use a different working directory, user or SERVER_JARFILE value. Check the actual startup configuration.
